Gamma Pi - Alcorn State Unversity

The Gamma Pi Chapter

The Alcorn State University Chapter, the Gamma Pi of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was recently awarded a $15,000 grant for 2 years from the Argosy Foundation to help increase minority representation in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for it’s Guide Right Programs. The mission of the Argosy Foundation is to support people and programs that make our society a better place to live.  In addition their intention is to solve systemic problems, build teams and communities, create replicable solutions, and inspire others to contribute in their own ways. 

Specifically members of the Guide Right Program will travel to Kenner, Louisiana in March to compete in the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition. The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. We are partnering with the Alcorn State University Department of Biological Sciences, School of Agricultural Science as well as the local school districts to help prepare the students for their Robotic competition. All registration costs, fees, supplies, materials, and travel will be covered by the grant and allocated accordingly.

Undergraduate Achievement

In addition we had four undergraduate brothers to maintain a 4.0 GPAs for the spring as well as the Fall 2017 semesters respectively.  We have had a total of 8 brothers to graduate with honors. In additional Rodrick Patterson was named as the National Undergraduate Guide Right Committee Co-Chairman.

In this capacity Rodrick has assured that the Gamma Pi Chapter’s Guide Right has become one of the first undergraduate chapters to complete their National Guide Right Certification as well as working with all Chapters to complete this goal.  Brother Courtney Taylor spent the summer doing research on Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria at Pennsylvania State University Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Microbiology as a member of the Summer Research Opportunity Program.  

Brother De’Lance Turner was named to the all-Academic Team as well as becoming the all-time leading rusher for the Alcorn State University Football team while maintain a 4.0 GPA and 2X SWAC Champions.  Brother Kelsey Bank attended a national conference and recently graduated with his degree is Criminal Justice magna cum laude.

Disaster Relief

Most recently the Gamma Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. was able to help establish the Alcorn State University Red Cross club to help assist with major natural disasters and relief efforts that are warranted in times of need.
